I needed a reminder to be thankful...

I was in the throws of planning out my day (two birthdays today), errands, a car in the shop, a kink in our showing service, and a three year old who was so exhausted she killed over at 8:15am for a nap. After a 15-minute clean, I decided to hop on the computer while she was still sleeping and I found the highlight of my week:
Our weekly email from Dallen. I always have a new appreciation for life after I read his emails. My heart ripped open as I thought about the sweet members over in India and Dallen has basically told us that BAPTISM=SACRIFICE (understatement) over there. I hope you don't mind if I share some of his comments because I know YOU guys are all awesome. I'm sorry it's long!
Thought #1

We are suffering a fairly desperate crunch for missionary senior couples here in India...if anybody knows a couple that is considering serving a senior mission could they please send the e-mail addresses on to me, or my mother? My mission President can request them specifically for service in the India Bangalore Mission, and can assign them as proselyting, humanitarian, CES or Public Relations couples depending on their preference. We have had about 7 of our eleven couples go home in the past 3 months, and there apparently aren’t any left to replace them.

Thought #2

President Nichols has encouraged every missionary to make long term, as well as short term goals, and while this really gets the average American missionary excited as he dreams of blue jeans, basketball and BYU, I have noticed that the Indian Elders shoulders almost droop a little bit when they think of their release date.

This could be because they will be going home to families that are not members of the church; to houses that don’t have floors, beds, air-conditioners, running water, or more than a single light bulb, like my companion Elder Polupalli. It could be because they are expected to go back to their home with the obligation of supporting their parents, and their younger brothers’ and sisters’ educations, as well as affording a dowry for this marriage, and various “gifts” for various other family members, all with the strong possibility that their parents will arrange marriages for them to Hindu girls and they will have the option of either dishonoring their family by running, or being attached to a woman not of their faith and struggle to raise their children the way they should without even the possibility of a temple sealing. Thoughts of further education for most of them don’t seem to have really crossed their minds--their family obligations will take care of that.

We talked until about midnight on the bumpy sleeper cars of the Jaghbal express on the way back to Chennai from Bangalore, and I lay on my bunk awake for a few more hours pondering. It hit me at about 3 o’clock in the morning and so I made a quick note in my study journal using the light up light on my watch, and then made a phone call to our CES director early the next morning.

Side note: The Indian Missionaries weren't able to benefit from PEF

We had a good hourlong conversation about the PEF (Perpetual Education) fund, and he promised to come out to Chennai to speak with each of the native Elders in my zone personally, so that a solution could be found for each of them to not only extend their education options, but also their career options. I was particularly happy to note that several of the things I had pointed out in my letter writing binge on the PEF fund last year had been corrected... Hopefully soon we will have approval for the PEF fund to begin loaning enough money to returned missionaries that they will be able to afford a Masters degree, as opposed to the two year technical and mechanical training courses the PEF fund typically caters to.

My favorite comment was made last night by Elder Polupalli, who was born and raised in Rajahmundry and who spent several years with the 4 other members of his family crushing large rocks with hammers into smaller ones to make gravel for cement ten hours a day. They were paid 120 rupees (about $3) for every dump truck load of boulders they completed. Last night he told me after companionship prayer, “Elder Allred, my generation will not go for press rocks again.” It has been a great couple of days.

Mum = Work in Progress

GREAT parenting book: Piggyback Rides and Slippery Slides by Lynnae Allred. I had my mom pick it up for me last week while she was in Utah. Lynnae is changing mothers one play date, one dinner, one fun idea at a time. I felt a refreshing resolve to play more with Kya--especially because I've been a little distracted with the move, new calling, yadda yadda. I noticed other bloggers loving her ideas, too!!
I had to document Kya begging to do the dishes. Sure! She even added a "pleeeeese, mom!" SAWEET!
She was so excited to help clean the showers the next day. I love this little peanut. We said a quick prayer in the car on our way to school this morning.
Kya: "Amen. Mom, I hope the ants don't come and want to eat my honey skin."
What - where did that come from?
Kya-isms (the flip-flopper):
"Square Temple"
"Life of Tree"
"Mow Lawner"
And yes, I should also insert the fact that Lynnae is my incredibly amazing sister-in-law who I love. Incredible mother.

I've been Tagged

Since I'm already being unproductive, I couldn't resist:

This is what you do:
1. Pick up the nearest book (at least 123 pages).
2. Turn to page 123.
3. Find the 5th sentence
4. Post the 5th sentence on your blog.
5. Tag 5 people.

Was it Savary, Bonaparte's aide? "I saw him on the road, " the man said. It was Savary. "He didn't get your letter until this morning." Another cough. "When it was too late." - The Last Great Dance on Earth

I love this book! It's from a great trilogy about Josephine Bonaparte. I love the historical notes--

I Tag: Both my Amy's (Delaware and TX), Allie, Tristan, Christine!

My week in a nutshell

I decided to update my blog as "me time" before I have to run out the door to Roadshow tonight. Does that make me really pathetic?? (Don't answer!)
1) Our trip to the Jelly Belly Factory - LOVING my stashed bag of belly flops!

2) Great, great weather.

3) Here is my shout out to Kate. The cousins at BYU all decided to join up for an Intermural team and WON the championship! It would have been fun to cheer them on! Deb scored at the very end and yup, because she's a "girl," they got two points for the win! GO GIRLS!

4) Last, BUT DEFINITELY NOT LEAST - is roadshow. Roadshow, roadshow....ROADSHOW! The kids are dang funny and the leaders are amazing!! Our performance is tonight so we'll see if we survive! (I have 35 trophies down here at my feet...)

5) TONIGHT. TONIGHT is a big night. The Flames and the Sharks are tied in the series and the FLAMES are definitely out-playing the Sharks. We'll see the show-down between Iginla and Thornton tonight. I'm dying that my parents don't have a DVR....grrrr (probably better that way. I'm getting WAY too into it).

We got to run to Merced Sunday for a family dinner and I haven't seen the aunts and uncles in so long. It was good to see everyone. I was dang exhausted and pounding the sodium to keep afloat! (Doctor's orders!!) I'll have to post pictures later...Kya loves her cousins!

lights, camera, PSE Actions!

This post is for anyone that likes playing around with actions in Photoshop. I didn't even know about these until last week and usually just manually adjust all my photos! Meanwhile, I'm not that tech-savy so I spent two whole days trying to download and create the .atn and .psd files! And I got most of them working! (THIS IS A HUGE "W" IN THE WIN COLUMN). The left side is a photo I snapped at the lookout point on Mt. Diablo and the right are a few action samples I was dinking around with.
Here are some free actions I liked and here are some instructions (in case you're like me). *wink*wink*

Bring on the Milkshakes

This is, admittedly, in protest of Lee's post. Our two teams are going at it in the Stanley Cup right now and certain people in this family have the audacity to vote for the Sharks! (Seriously, where is Dad's allegiance?!?!)
Milkshakes at stake. Milkshakes are always at stake. Especially around March Madness--however, Grandma seems to have most wins over the past 4-5 years.
GO FLAMES!!!
I was actually in labor during one of the playoff games where Calgary was in the last round fighting for the cup and so I tattoo'd my big ol' belly with a Flames tattoo. Very lovely - especially a few hours later when there was no solid baby in my belly! (ew) I'll spare you the photos! I remember pacing the halls and NOT A SOUL was working -- everyone was crowding the corridors (nurses, doctors, surgeons, etc) to watch the game. Don't mess with their hockey!

GAME 1: Flames 3 - Sharks 2
Game 2: Flames 0 - Sharks 2
Game 3: Flames 4 - Sharks 3
Game 4: Tuesday April 15
Game 5: Thursday April 17
Game 6: TBA
Game 7: TBA

April Fools!

Ok, so my sister-in-law is absolutely hilarious and one of my favorite people. Here are her notes from April Fools. Consider yourself warned if you are going to Girls Camp in the Carrollton Stake!!! (I'll leave her name off to "protect the innocent")

Kira is usually our prankster (the water sprayer is old news here, as well as switching out the innerds of the cereal boxes), but with it being finals week, she barely had time to blink, let alone do dastardly deeds. So, at 12:30 a.m. when I remembered it was April fool's, I snuck into Tyler's room and sewed him into his sheets - pjs to the sheets and the comforter to Tyler. I was giggling so hard I thought I was going to pee my pants. Fortunately he's a SOUND sleeper and I could kneel next to him on the bed without notice. At one point he shifted and started rubbing his nose (I was sewing his comforter to his chest at the time) and I temporarily lost the needle, but found it soon enough after moving his arm out of the way.
I tied Dan and Nate together across their room - arms to legs and vice versa. Nate was not amused.
I can't set foot in Kira's room without her waking up, so I let her go all day wondering when I was going to get her. While she was at school I "cupped" her room - you staple cups together to fill the room and fill them with water. So the only way in is to remove them - one cup at a time. She cleared away just enough that she could jump over the rest and while Grandpa Woodfield was here visiting over the weekend, he helped her take it all down.

She told me to 'watch out" because she was going to get me back when I least expect it. I told her not to "poke the beast", because I was far more diabolical, and I had better resources. Still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

The best April fool was unintended. I colored all the water in the toilet tanks (so the nasty color comes out when you flush) and in the taps (involves removing part of the faucet and some colored tablets). Craig came in to the kitchen that morning and announced solidly, "I am making MY OWN breakfast this morning!" He went on to regale the kids with stories of his mother over-salting their oatmeal every April Fool's morning. He was fixing instant oatmeal and turned on the faucet and filled his bowl with orange water. The timing couldn't have been better. and I was SOOOOOOO tempted to salt it up as it sat in the microwave for 30 minutes while he showered.

So I am now legend among Tyler's friends and their mothers, and the kids all call me madre diablo. (And to think this was just the first things that came to mind, I'm already making plans for next year).

Weekend at the cabin...

Playing at Pinecrest...
We saw these guys running around the lake in white with paintball guns. Now seriously, HOW fun would that be???

Had a blast - we love to get away conference weekends and thought we'd just stream the conference sessions. Woops - guess that doesn't work in the mountains! So we grabbed some church clothes and ran to the church and then Mikey (Hal's bro) was awesome and just put his cell up to the TV and we listened to conference on Sunday. It was fun for the three of us to hang out (go on hikes, watch videos, do crafts, and eat and eat and eat...)

Just when you think the party's over...

For those of you that know Hal, well, he's brilliant at "thinking outside the box." So the scavenger hunt was awesome. So I was then sent to Kya's toy box with cookies, the game closet for a clipboard (long story about me not enjoying being "in charge" of things), his side of the bed for cute little cards and earrings, and then finally my computer where he got me a new calendar (HE TOTALLY GETS ME!). Well, he calls me tonight on his way home from work and says, "Oh, ya look in the freezer for more."
So awesome Hal built not ONE, but TWO hunts because he said it's like Christmas and then you're done opening your presents and no matter how perfect the gifts were, you always like to open one more. (Classic Hal, eh?) So I went on my second hunt to find ice cream, beef jerky, and cute shirts he bought for me. I WAS SO IMPRESSED! My favorite part were the sweet notes he left at each stop.
Thanks, Hal. You're the best -- I wouldn't trade you for the world!!!
Hal is reading this over my shoulder and says, "Thanks, Jess, I'm glad you communicate with me!" - haha - is this the sign of a blogoholic?? YIKES!
Came across this cake dome today on Costco.com. It matches the lamp Hal brought and the chair in my head. Sure, practical, right? hehe--too cute, though.

I heart Hal

Did I mention how excited I am to have my husband back around?? If not, let me tell you again-- HALLELUJAR! Apparently he and Kya plotted last night while I was at roadshow practice and when I took Kya to preschool this morning, I found a sweet note on my seat along with a little gift that took me to my trunk where I found my favorite treats, which took me to my scriptures (and I had to take a few phone calls, so I've yet to discover the rest)!
I heart Hal. He makes my days BRIGHT and wonderful! I'm a dang lucky girl...
